| These are my babies, my Frankensteins, my creative outlet. These are my OOAK (one of a kind) customized dolls. Most are Barbies, but some are four-and-a-half-inch Kelly dolls. The customization process is intense. First, all of the factory-applied facial paint is removed with fingernail polish remover; then an outline for a new face is traced on with (very sharp!) pencil. The outlines are filled in, blended, coaxed, cussed at, redrawn, and filled in until the face looks just so. Sometimes, I reroot the hair, meaning that after the factory hair is ripped out via the neck hole with tweezers (THUMB CRAMP AIEE), new hair is sewn into the head four or five strands at a time. Rerooting is extremely labor intensive, so usually I opt to simply style the hair instead. I may also decide to reshape an arm or hand using boiling water. The finishing part, and also my least favorite...well, next to rerooting...is to sew up an outfit for Her Majesty. Take a gander below to see the end product of all this. |
